Q Restaurant :: So D'lish. New Zealand's food blog website

Degustation, or tasting menus seem to be more popular these days and it's a great way to sample a range of the restaurant's food in one sitting. I will be trying out Q's tasting menu this week and you could win the opportunity to try it too! The menu is a 'culinary discovery of the South Pacific' by internationally acclaimed chef, Robert Oliver and is exclusive to Q Restaurant at The Westin Auckland.

This tasting menu is available for a limited time: 9 - 27 May 2010. The tasting menu is $100 per person, accompanied by matching wines from $60. Purchase a copy of Robert Oliver's book on which the menu is based, Me'a Kai, for $75.

Q Restaurant at The Westin Auckland Lighter Quay
21 Viaduct Harbour Avenue, Auckland.

Hi I have a comment about dining out in Howick, and would like to know how other diners feel. I recently had a Thai dinner in Howick which was typical Thai Cuisine. Benjarong was the name, we had eaten there a once before a few years ago. Going out for dinner is a bit of a luxury for us these days with two young kids. In fact date night with the wife is something I look forward to. However from now on I will be traveling into the city for much better value. In fact I recommend Thai House in Ponsonby or Khao in Auckland CBD. In comparison in Howick, an entree was twice the price and mains at least 10$ per main more expensive for curry and rice. I had heard reports that tourists felt NZ was a rip off, I am inclined to join and agree with that sentiment. I could run my car for a week on what i felt was over charged, and excessive. RIPPED OFF IN HOWICK!

Just had high tea at Waitkere Estate in the weekend for a 50th birthday. It is very 60's decor and would be excellent spot to take gran nana for a high tea. Lots of food and a lovely xmas feel for mid xmas at the moment in this cold weather.

All I can say is "Wow!!" thank you so much Andrea and D'lish for this amazing prize!!! We went last night to Q Restaurant and had the Me'a Kai tasting menu. We were led to our table which a great view over the waterfront. The restaurant has a very stylish atmosphere with orange marble on the walls lit up to give a warm glow to the room. We were given a copy of the tasting menu and proceeded to sit back and be pampered!! First up, a glass of Cloudy Bay Pelorus - yum!! and this was paired with a selection of four different marinated raw fish starters! My favourite was a combination of snapper and mango. Next up was a really delicious soup made from Plaintains - toasted coconut on top and the addition of some curry flavours made it really some together - and paired with what was, for me, the wine of the night: Cloudy Bay Chardonnay. Following this was a salad of watermelon, pawpaw and watercress (with CB Sauvignon) and then it was onto the main! By this stage we realised we would need to pace ourselves to get through all the courses!!! Out came an amazing selection of goodies: chicken roasted with tahitian vanilla, fish cooked with coconut milk, incredible suckling pig with the most amazing crackling - and a selection of salads and greens - oh and some really really good kumara in coconut.
This was all paired with CB Pinot Noir - very satisfying - and by the time we had finished this we had serious doubts we could manage to do dessert - but hey, how could we not make the most of this opportunity!! So we pressed on and had the most delicious fried bananas, banana coconut pudding (poke) and another banana pudding from Fiji called Lote. All paired with CB Late Harvest Riesling - a great combination. At this point we practically rolled home but not before meeting Chef, Robert Oliver who was there in person and signed my copy of the book (again part of the prize! wow!).

All in all would totally recommend Q restaurant - absolutely lovely experience and perfect for a special occasion. the staff were really great, the atmosphere very special and the food and wines top notch. And would also really recommend checking out this tasting menu while you can and also Robert Oliver's book - fantastic he has put in all this work to document the food of the Pacific and hopefully encourage more people who go there to try the local dishes!!!

thanks again Andrea and D'lish- your blog rocks!
    cheers
