Chocolate stout cake recipe :: So D'lish. New Zealand's food blog website.

I love to bake cakes. What I love even more are cakes that are easy to make yet are so d'lish! I have my favourite chocolate cake recipe here but with a slight twist - the addition of chocolate stout.

You could describe this cake as a bit of a bloke's cake. It has beer in it, stout even, so it has to be called a bloke's cake! I discovered this chocolate stout from Marlborough's Renaissance Beer on Twitter and they mentioned that it would be nice in a chocolate cake. Oh yes!

Serve this cake with real chocolate sauce and a scoop of ice cream and you will be loved forever!

Chocolate Stout Cake

Ingredients

175g butter
1 1/4c sugar
3 eggs
2 cups flour
2 tbsp cocoa powder
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup milk
2 tsp baking powder
1 cup stout or other dark beer (I used Renaissance Chocolate Stout)
2 tbsp golden syrup, melted
100g chocolate, chopped or chocolate buttons

Directions
  1. Heat the oven to 180ÂșC and grease a tin - 23cm square by 4cm deep and line with baking paper
  2. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, ensuring that you mix well after each addition
  4. Sift the flour, baking powder and cocoa powder together and gradually beat it into the mixture
  5. Stir the baking soda into the milk and add to the mixture. Add the stout and the melted golden syrup and stir well
  6. Fold in the chocolate
  7. Spread the mixture into the prepared baking tin bake for 30 minutes.
Serve with real chocolate sauce.

Wow, I'm stoked that my recipe was enjoyed by so many at your event! Which stout did you use? I rather liked the chocolate stout for this recipe as it added yet another layer of chocolatey-ness.

Thanks for letting me know, Dominic. What a great way to start the week.

We used this recipe for an offsite function catering to a beer brewing fraternity. After a little trepidation ,when multiplying ratios to include 2 litres of Stout .. ! I am pleased to write that the results were great . Thanks dlish!!!
